via Puberty coming earlier for U.S. girls: study.

Interesting article about factors that may be contributing to girls getting their period earlier.  As always, I would to hear comments and opinions.

via Texas Comprehensive Center – Parent and Community Involvement in a College/Career-Ready Culture, Briefing Papers.

From SEDL out of Austin.  Great read.  SEDL is great because it is focused on developing Professional Learning Communities, something about which I am VERY passionate!  Every school needs to strive to become a true professional learning community.

Although I’m not a fan of the title of this article, it’s worth the read.  As always, comments and discussion are welcome!

via Education Week: 49 Applicants Win i3 Grants.

This is an interesting article and worth the read.  It also raises some important questions regarding the what , where , when, why and how of grant and award distribution from the federal government.

Although I support schools that innovate and push themselves to the next level, I am not on board with some of the competition between programs.  One main complaint in education is that a huge disparity exists among campuses, districts and even states with regards to the quality of education offered to students.

In this case, the 4 winners were all high profile institutions with resources, etc.  What happens to the “little guy” or the schools and districts without the ability the innovate on the same level?  Aren’t the entitled to and in more need of assistance and additional funding?

I would love to hear from you!

via Education Week: Senate Passes Bill to Make School Lunches Healthy.

I would like to take more time to offer my thoughts.  However, I am more interested to hear what others have to say first (shocking to those who know me, I know!).

Questions to consider…do we want more government involvement in our lives?  Do we need to protect children who cannot make decisions on their own?  Is it the government’s job to legislate behavior?  Will we pay a much greater societal price if we do not reign in the US obesity rate (currently at 27% by some estimates)?
